How to Start a Gallery Wall

A gallery wall is one of the easiest ways to transform an empty wall into a statement piece. Whether you love minimalist interiors, eclectic spaces, or a more classic look, a thoughtfully arranged collection of artwork can instantly add personality and warmth to your home.

But creating a gallery wall can feel overwhelming at first. How many pieces should you use? Where should you place them? And should all the frames match?

The good news is that there are no strict rules. The best gallery walls feel personal, collected, and effortless. Here’s how to get started.

1. Choose Your Wall

Start by choosing a wall that could use a little more character. Living rooms, hallways, staircases, bedrooms, and dining areas are all great places for a gallery wall.

Think about the furniture underneath the wall as well. If you’re hanging artwork above a sofa, console table, or bed, make sure the arrangement feels proportional to the furniture.

2. Decide on a Style

Before choosing your artwork, think about the mood you want to create. Do you prefer a clean and sophisticated look, or something more relaxed and eclectic?

For a cohesive gallery wall, you can choose artwork that shares a similar color palette or theme. If you prefer a more collected look, mix photographs, paintings, illustrations, prints, mirrors, and other decorative pieces.

3. Start With a Focal Point

Choose one larger or more eye-catching piece to be the focal point of your gallery wall. Then build the rest of the arrangement around it.

Your focal piece doesn’t necessarily have to be in the exact center. Placing it slightly off-center can create a more natural and dynamic composition.

4. Mix Frames and Sizes

Don’t be afraid to experiment with different frame styles and sizes. A combination of large and small pieces can make the wall feel more interesting.

If you’re worried about the result looking too chaotic, keep one element consistent—such as the color of the frames, the artwork’s color palette, or the spacing between the pieces.

Once everything is hung, step back and look at the wall from different angles. You may find that one piece needs to move slightly or that the composition needs a little more balance.

Most importantly, don’t worry about making it perfect. A gallery wall should evolve over time. Add new pieces, change photographs, or rearrange the layout whenever you feel like refreshing the space.

The secret to a beautiful gallery wall is simple: choose pieces you love, create a sense of balance, and let your personality lead the way. Discover Studio Mottos’ gallery wall collection and find pieces to bring your walls to life.
